PTA Monday Memo May 17, 2021

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

We would like to thank the Chatterton PTA for the delicious Staff Appreciation Luncheon for the Chatterton Staff!  It truly made us all feel special and we appreciate all the support from our families and the PTA!

Chatterton School is thrilled to accept the donation of a beautiful purple leaf plum tree that has been planted in the front of our school building.  This memorial tree was donated by the Knaust Family in memory of James Knaust, a Chatterton alumnus and combat veteran.  It is the perfect addition to the front of our school building!

In August 2019, New York State adopted Erin’s Law which requires public schools to teach child sexual abuse and exploitation prevention classes to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Erin’s Law is intended to help children, teachers, and parents in New York State schools identify sexual abuse, and to provide awareness, assistance, referral, or resource information for children and families who are victims of child sexual abuse.

Merrick has partnered with The Safe Center Long Island & CAPS to deliver “Safety Rules! Staying safe when you’re in, out and all about!”- a Child Abuse Prevention Workshop. This workshop is presented by The Safe Center, a non-profit agency located in Bethpage, N.Y. Developmentally appropriate classroom lessons as well as parent and teacher workshops will support the district in fulfilling the NYS Erin’s Law mandate.  These workshops will be taking place this week.

Safety Rules! emphasizes that children have the right not to be hurt and teaches them developmentally appropriate concepts that will prepare them for understanding and practicing the skills necessary to identify safe and unsafe situations.  This workshop is designed to introduce young students to the issue of child abuse in an easy-to-understand, non-threatening way.  Some points that the program makes clear to children are:

·         They are in charge of their body

·         They can say no to unwanted touches

·         To tell an adult they trust if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe

·         There is a difference between good and bad secrets

·         To understand different types of harm and abuse

Have a great week!

Principal
