This year’s election experience will surely go down in history.  I would be remiss if I didn’t share a few of my observations and hopes for our country, as it directly connects with our students and our community.  More votes were cast in this election than ever before.  Both presidential candidates earned a number of votes that exceeds the number of votes for a presidential candidate in any previous election in U.S. history.  What an incredible display of citizenship!  Our country exists because of the ability of the people to express their beliefs.  I’m so proud to participate in a system where the people have a voice and are able to share it through their votes.

People are loyal, committed, and deep rooted in their beliefs. Sadly, there have been instances of anger, division and opposition from every angle. But when faced with someone who disagrees with you, whether friend or foe, we must have the strategies and willingness to approach one another with respect and empathy. It is our responsibility to teach the children this very thing and to model it for them every day.  Now is the time to educate ourselves in the opinions and experiences of others and to find an entry point into a world of unity, commonality and harmony.  At Chatterton School, we will take this responsibility seriously and we ask you to do the same.  Below are some quotes from our past presidents that can be used as a conversation starter with your children. Let’s continue to work together to create an environment of kindness, respect and peace at Chatterton and beyond!

“We become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.” ― Jimmy Carter

“Whatever you are, be a good one.” ― Abraham Lincoln

“I have opinions of my own – strong opinions – but I don’t always agree with them.” ― George H.W. Bush

“We all do better when we work together. Our differences do matter, but our common humanity matters more.” ― Bill Clinton

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.” ― Barack Obama

“Let me speak plainly: The United States of America is and must remain a nation of openness to people of all beliefs. Our very unity has been strengthened by this pluralism. That’s how we began; this is how we must always be. The ideals of our country leave no room whatsoever for intolerance, anti-Semitism, or bigotry of any kind — none.” – Ronald Reagan
