A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Dear Merrick Families,
With new information emerging daily regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) in New York State, the Merrick School District continues to take precautions, reevaluate and revise procedures to keep our schools healthy and safe. We are receiving regular briefings from the New York State Department of Health and continuing to maintain contact with the Nassau County Commissioner of Health, for local updates and advisement.
As we have shared, Merrick has been diligent in properly cleaning and sanitizing all areas of our buildings. We have implemented a cleaning protocol for each classroom that allows for cleaning surfaces and other identified germ areas in our schools. These areas will be cleaned with an EPA approved surface cleaner, effective for killing Coronavirus, when classrooms are vacant during the day, including during specials, lunch and afterschool.
Merrick students are being educated about cough and sneeze hygiene. Nurses have visited classrooms to model for students how to become diligent and proficient with hand washing and use of hand sanitizer. Additionally, we will be purchasing a sixty-percent alcohol-based hand sanitizing product for use in classrooms under supervision. If you do not wish your child to use this alcohol-based sanitizing product, please notify your school principal in writing.
We need your support. As an additional precaution, we are asking families to send water bottles for drinking during the day to limit the use of communal water fountains. Students will be able to fill their water bottles using the bottle fillers. Please continue to remind students about proper sneeze etiquette and to “cover your cough.” Also, please keep your child home if your child is sick and schedule an appointment with your physician. Notify the school nurse if your child is ill.
The National Association of School Psychologists has developed a useful resource for speaking to your children about CoVID-19. You can reach the website via this link: https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-(coronavirus)-a-parent-resource .
Other useful information can be found at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) coronavirus web page: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html and the New York State Department of Health webpage: https://health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/coronavirus/ .
As per the Health Department, there is no need to cancel school or social events at this time. However, there is, a need to be proactive in our planning, take the necessary measures to prevent the spread of illness in our schools and communicate with our parents. We will continue to work with New York State and local health authorities to monitor any changes.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,Dominick Palma Superintendent of Schools
