PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

During our first trimester in technology, our students have been discussing the importance of Digital Citizenship, specifically staying safe and smart while spending time online.  Classroom teachers, Mrs. McCabe and the students have discussed various age-appropriate topics, such as balancing digital media, making safe and smart social media posts, and going to age-appropriate websites.

In primary grades, students have discussed visiting age-appropriate websites and communicating only with people they know. In upper grades, students learned the acronym T.H.I.N.K. (Thoughtful, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, and Kind) to evaluate their online behavior.  Class sessions have emphasized creating social media posts that do not reveal private information.  Students have participated in a variety of activities where they determined what information is appropriate to share online, and what to do in uncomfortable online situations.  Whether online gaming or on social media, all students are encouraged to reflect on their own social media habits.

Use these questions at home to discuss some of these essentials with your child:

  • What apps do you use?
  • Are your accounts private?
  • Do you have more than one account?
  • Do you only accept people you know in real life?
  • Do your photos or videos accidentally reveal personal information?
    • Address
    • Town
    • School Name
    • Team Name
  • Are your posts thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind?

Additionally, we ask all families to be mindful of the apps your child(ren) regularly use and their privacy settings. Please utilize the attached resources to continue to reinforce the conversation at home with your child(ren).
